Stemming from AMCTM, SofTools_MetroNet has been an European Thematic Network started in 2002 and ended in 2005, which aimed at establishing more co-operation in the field of advanced measurement-software tools and their mathematical and statistical foundations, by calling upon scientists from the mathematical/computational fields in universities, research centres, industrial organisations and the metrological field to meet and share experiences between themselves and with software engineers.

There were four areas where SofTools_MetroNet activities concentrate in co-ordinating, promoting, testing, evaluating, harmonising and in performing educational tasks: 

IMEKO TC21 is a new Technical Committee formed on November 16, 2005, on "Mathematical Tools for Measurements", whose scope is to promote the harmonisation, the co-ordinated use and the development of new mathematical and statistical tools for measurements, and their implementation in guides, procedures and codes, acting as a portal on an international environment.

Initially, and until June 2005, its activities coincided with the activities of the European Network SofTools_MetroNet, but on a worldwide basis.
